SMVS athletes earn gold at track and field championships

The track and field team at Senator Myles Venne School (SMVS) found success at a tournament they had never competed at before.

Three athletes earned medals at the 11th annual Aboriginal Indoor Track and Field Championships in Saskatoon. It was the first time students from the school attended the event and Coach Lorne Charles said he was surprised to see them do so well. Those who were awarded medals included Cyrena Ratt (Grade 12) who took gold in high jump and silver in long jump, Haley Ross (Grade 12) received gold for triple long-jump and Tyree Cook (Grade 9) earned silver for high jump.

“I was pretty amazed myself,” Charles said. “It was pretty big event. I would estimate 300 to 400 athletes. They were from all over Saskatchewan.”

The track and field team at SMVS traditionally competes at the Prince Albert Grand Council’s Track and Field Championships held in May, which they will be doing again next month. Last year, the team did well at that event and Charles stated there was enough interest to try compete at another tournament as well. He noted the opportunity arose for them to travel to Saskatoon and it turned out to be a positive experience.

The championships began April 5 and lasted throughout the weekend until April 7. Considering the event was held so early in the year, the team had to do all of their training indoors. Some of the events were difficult to prepare for, but Charles stated they did the best they could do. In total, 11 athletes representing SMVS travelled to Saskatoon.
