Minor baseball remains popular in tri-communities

La Ronge and Area Minor Baseball hit the halfway mark in the club’s season.

That’s according to President Corey Borthwick who said it’s been a relatively normal season so far, adding there are about 210 youth between the ages of three and 18 involved. Although numbers are down slightly compared to 2018, he stated the club is still relatively popular in the tri-communities.

“When we started it, we weren’t sure what we would get for numbers,” Borthwick said, noting La Ronge and area minor baseball began 13 years ago. “That first year I think we got 120 and it’s been building ever since.”

Everyone participating in the club is split into different age groups who they then practice with during the season. Borthwick mentioned the league is mostly non-competitive, but there’s one 11-U provincial team called The Hooks which plays competitively. That team is composed of 11 members.

The Hooks have its first tournament of the season this weekend in Prince Albert. In two weeks, the squad will compete in another tournament in Saskatoon. Provincial championships are during the third week in July.

“We’ve had four different teams go to provincials and they’re never blown out,” Borthwick said. “They’re not the best team there, but the last team we sent was a 13-U team in 2015 during the fires.”

On June 9, all local teams will compete in the league tournament at Pre-Cam Community School. The event will be from approximately 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The season, which began May 6, ends the third week in June.
