Alumni beat CCHS basketball team at special tournament

It was a busy few days of basketball at La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School (CCHS) as two tournaments were recently held at the location.

The most recent occurred March 6 and 7 called the Churchill Chargers Alumni Basketball Tournament, which featured four teams including male senior and junior CCHS squads, one composed of former students and another with coaches and senior girls. It came down to the seniors and alumni in the final, which went to the former students by a 73-63 score.

“The trophy is like an old shoe we put on a piece of wood, and it’s all just a lot of fun and fun trash talking and stuff,” CCHS Coach Derek Konga said. “It’s just a chance for a lot of the past alumni to come back and play with the current team.”

The tournament was played in a round-robin format with one playoff game to determine the winner. Konga noted it was the fourth year the school hosted the event and everyone involved had to have been with basketball with the team at some point. Although it seems popular with former male players, Konga is hoping more female players get involved too.

Konga mentioned many of those at the tournament already play basketball together at the Kikinahk Friendship Centre. He said the event as CCHS builds community and everyone helps each other.

“When some high school students finish their basketball careers and the same with football, it’s tough for them to walk away from the sport,” Konga said. “This weekend was a chance for the boys to come back and play in their old gym, see their old coaches and teammates.”

Playoffs for the first year of the Northern Basketball League also came to an end March 5 at CCHS. There were four teams involved with the tournament and the senior team beat Senator Myles Venne School by 53-38 for first place. Third place went to the CCHS junior team and fourth went to Stanley Mission.
