La Ronge council set to announce restrictions due to pandemic

Information will be released to the public at a regular La Ronge council meeting tonight on how the town will deal with the spread of COVID-19.

That’s according to La Ronge Mayor Ron Woytowich who said a press release would be issued at the start of the meeting at 7 p.m. Although it is a public meeting, Woytowich is urging residents not to attend due to concerns about spreading the virus.

“Personally, because of my age and my health, I don’t want to be part of something where we end up spreading it more,” he said.

Earlier today, Air Ronge administration announced effectively immediately they have decided to limit person-to-person communication to phone calls or emails only. Customers of the Lac La Ronge Regional Fill Station will still be able to access their accounts and should follow the instructions posted on the door.

Woytowich noted the spread of COVID-19 could have drastic effects for La Ronge as some residents could be faced with layoffs due to restrictions put in place from the state of emergency announced by the province. He added single-parent households and those where both parents work could also face difficulties due to schools being closed as of Friday.

“That’s going to kill a community very quickly even though there is probably a legitimate scare in controlling the virus,” Woytowich said. “What I am worried about and what I think everyone is worried about is that I don’t want to get a virus and I don’t want to get sick. At the same time, we don’t want to kill our community and that’s putting it absolutely bluntly.”
