Town of La Ronge prepared to declare state of emergency if needed

Apr 24, 2020 | 5:00 PM

The Town of La Ronge is prepared to call a local state of emergency if the need arises.

That’s according to Acting Chief Administrative Officer Dean Yaremchuk, who said a resolution has been prepared for when the time comes when council determines its warranted. He noted declaring a state of emergency would provide council with special powers to do what they need to do within the municipality to control a potential emergency.

“There are a number of things in play,” Yaremchuk said. “For us, we’re following the lead of the Saskatchewan Health Authority in regards to, in this case, the COVID-19 situation and I think we’re in very close contact with them and the province. They would probably provide us information that a point of contact may trigger a state of local emergency response.”

If a local state of emergency is declared, there are two emergency operations centres that have been identified including the La Ronge Regional Fire Department building and the town office.
