No localized flooding in Air Ronge, no date set for annual spring clean up

There was no localized flooding in Air Ronge this spring runoff.

“This year went really well for us,” Assistant Administrator Gavin Willins said. “The guys had done some extra work leading up to the thaw like getting culverts exposed and what not. Once the melt actually came, they were able to get to it a little ahead of schedule.”

Work to ensure culverts remained free of melting ice and snow went on for at least a one-week period. During that time, Willins noted maintenance staff were out on the weekend to make sure areas in the village didn’t flood.

The street sweeper is also ready to clean up the dirt on local roadways. Staff will wait for rain to do the job, Willis said, or slowly follow the water truck if it remains dry. Garbage disposal has continued in Air Ronge throughout the pandemic.

“Those regular spring duties are well on schedule,” he said. “That’s also taking into account all the precautions we’re taking in respect to COVID-19. Making sure the guys are safe and everything is on track for us.”

While the village is still short an equipment operator, a summer student was hired April 16 to assist with maintenance duties. That individual will largely be responsible for general clean up duties to allow the more experienced staff to work on other projects. Willins added litter is currently being picked up from along Highway 2 and municipal parks.

With respect to the annual spring clean up in the tri-communities to remove yard waste or large items, no date has been set. That’s according to Lac La Ronge Regional Waste Management Authority Manager Betty Hutchinson. She said no date has been scheduled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
