Access Communications to broadcast La Ronge council meetings

Sep 2, 2020 | 2:00 PM

La Ronge town council meetings will soon be available to the public on a wider scale after a request from Access Communications was approved last week.

That means town council meetings will soon air on AccessNOW TV and residents will be able to watch them from home. All councillors voted in favour of the motion with the exception of Coun. Jordan McPhail who didn’t vote after he expressed a conflict of interest because of his career with SaskTel.

“My understanding of it is the way we have gone the last few weeks set up, they would actually just take that video footage themselves and use it that way,” Executive Assistant Allyson Richards said. “It’s not like there will be an extra camera in the room. That’s my understanding of it.”

Since the coronavirus pandemic began in March, council has made meetings more accessible to the public due to the limited number of people permitted in the Council Chamber. At first, they decided to allow residents to call and listen into the meetings, before finally releasing footage of them online. The July 29 regular meeting was the first to be posted in such a way.

As for the request from Access Communications, administration recommended to council for it to be approved. The decision also won’t have any additional cost for the municipality.

“We think its good just to increase the transparency of council,” Acting-Chief Administrative Officer Dean Yaremchuk said. “We’re going to have it up there anyway and it’s just another means of people being able to see what happens with council.”
