Voters in the municipalities of Air Ronge and La Ronge will soon head to the polls to elect new councils.

Starting tomorrow during regular business hours, residents of those communities can nominate candidates for the upcoming elections set for Nov. 9. In La Ronge, the position of mayor and six seats for councillor are up for grabs, while in Air Ronge, the mayor seat will be available, as well as four spots as councillor.

Nominations will close Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. and candidates will have a 24-hour period to withdraw their nomination. Nomination forms can be found at local municipal offices.

To be eligible to run in the election, individuals must be at least 18 years of age on election day and have been a resident of Saskatchewan for at least six months. Those who want to vote also need to be a resident of the municipality for at least three months immediately prior to the election or be the owner of assessed land in the municipality within the last three months.

In La Ronge, two members of council have already announced they plan to run in November’s municipal election. Deputy-Mayor Matthew Klassen intents to run for mayor, while Coun. Jordan McPhail is undecided on whether he will seek a spot as councillor or run for mayor instead.

The polls are expected to be open between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. on election day.
