Rebuild underway at Bloomfield’s Resort that was destroyed by fire last year

After a devastating fire last December, the rebuild of Bloomfield’s Bay Resort at Deschambault Lake is underway.

Owner Gary Bloomfield told northeastNOW the rebuild will include the restaurant and store with a liquor off-sale and no bar.

“Right now, we are framing for concrete, the store is framed and we are dropping heat lines and framing the shop,” Bloomfield said. “Cement will be poured and once that is in, we will get down to landscaping.”

Buildings will begin to go up in the next few weeks and hopefully get all outside work completed before it gets too cold, according to Bloomfield.

“It will be nice to get stuff opened back but it will be a long process with the COVID stuff and contractors coming and going,” Bloomfield said. “It’s a slow pace but a sure pace.”

A GoFundMe page was created following the fire to assist Bloomfield with immediate financial needs but he said that insurance has been a little bit of an issue for a while yet.

Local fishermen and rural residents were generous in donations helping with bills and replacing some items.

“It’s still a long battle to go because we lost everything from all of the 15 cabins and just everything,” Bloomfield said.

The set-up of the resort will be bigger than what it was but it is getting there.

“The summer was hard for cabin rentals with COVID so that didn’t help matters much there and we did notice the loss of income and jobs for those that had been working the store, garage and restaurant,” Bloomfield said.

As construction continues, the public is asked to avoid the site.

“We have seen people that are driving by, they slow down to check-it out, but it is not a time to slow down when big trucks are behind you and on the road,” Bloomfield said.

Any contractors in the area that have ideas and needing work are welcome to call Bloomfield to discuss potential jobs.

The Bloomfield’s Bay Resort has been in his family since his parents began the business in 1964. Caribou Creek Lodge is 127 km away, and after that it’s Flin Flon and Creighton.
