Northerners to receive Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers

Jun 22, 2021 | 5:00 PM

Two northerners have been named as recipients of the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers issued by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan.

There were 26 individuals across the province who will be honoured with the medal during a virtual ceremony on July 1 at 10 a.m. including La Ronge’s Scott Boyes and Stanley Mission’s Florence Bonaise.

“I’m very honoured by the recognition, to be honest,” Boyes said. “It’s very remarkable company to keep; the variety of people and their interests and their strengths. The common theme is the length of time they’ve committed to making their communities better is very good to be put in that sort of group.”

Boyes has been committed to serving La Ronge for many years by promoting and coaching various sports such as minor hockey, cross-country skiing, biathlon and judo. He is also an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion and has been a board member of several organizations, including Kikinahk Friendship Centre.

Boyes has been involved with the Don Allen Saskaloppet, as well as the Lac La Ronge Chamber of Commerce. In 2018, Boyes was also the recipient of the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal.

“There are a lot of people out there that could be just as deserving for such an award and all it takes is for someone to nominate them,” he said. “I encourage people to think about who they know who is deserving of recognition.”

Nominations for the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers are accepted on an ongoing basis throughout the year.

Bonaise was credited with displaying friendliness and generosity to her fellow citizens of Stanley Mission and the surrounding areas. Through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, she helped to establish a new tax clinic in Grandmother’s Bay. larongeNOW reached out to Bonaise for an interview, but she was unavailable by publishing.

The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers honours individuals who have demonstrated passion, dedication and commitment to their communities through significant, sustained and unpaid voluntary contributions. Through their efforts, they have made a difference in fields such as the arts, organized sports, youth and community organizations, and social issues. Their achievements include long-term, significant fundraising or lifetime dedication to service within community organizations.
