New Lac La Ronge landfill opens Tuesday

Jul 5, 2021 | 5:31 PM

A multimillion-dollar landfill is set to open Tuesday near La Ronge.

This afternoon tours were given to commercial carriers, municipal haulers and larongeNOW in anticipation of the new site opening to the public. Lac La Ronge Regional Waste Management Corporation Manager Betty Hutchinson said the new landfill cell has a life expectancy of 25 years and has many new modern features.

For instance, any water that comes into contact with waste is collected through a liner under the cell, pumped into a lined pond and then tested before its released into the environment or managed in a different way. There’s also a new road to the landfill that will open tomorrow.

“The access is off Highway 2 and the old access through Potato Lake Road will be shut off,” Hutchinson said.

Other communities including Brabant Lake, Grandmother’s Bay, Stanley Mission, Missinipe, Timber Bay, Ramsey Bay, Hall Lake and Weyakwin will all begin transferring garbage to the Lac La Ronge landfill in the coming years. In June, it was announced $3.7 million would be used to decommission landfills in Brabant Lake, Missinipe, Timber Bay and Weyakwin.

The funding from the federal and provincial government, as well as the local corporation, will also pay for the development of solid waste transfer sites in the above listed communities. They will range in complexity from full solid waste transfer stations to bins that residents can place their domestic solid waste.

“The details of each site have not yet been finalized as the project design has not been completed,” an email from the Office of the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities stated. “The location of the sites have not been finalized.”

There will also be new fees at the landfill such as a minimum $5 charge. Waste will be weighed using a weigh scale and users will be charged by tonnage or for specific items.

Residents living within the region, but without access to a garbage collection service, will receive an access card allowing them to deliver household waste to the landfill. Cards will be mailed out through Northern Municipal Services to eligible residents.
