Visions North awards thousands of dollars to young northern entrepreneurs

The Side Hustle Microgrant Program organized by Community Futures Visions North has awarded thousands of dollars to young local entrepreneurs.

The program was opened to individuals between the ages of 15 to 29 and was geared towards giving them the skills to develop their own business plan.

Visions North general manager Bill Hogan explained 20 people reached out interested in the program and seven were ultimately given $500 for successfully completing all the components.

“We’re going to run it again,” he said, noting the date is yet to be announced. “We’ve tried to engage youth lots of times…and this seemed to be one of the more successful ones.”

Those who completed the Side Hustle Microgrant Program were Wyatt Miller of Sparked Apparel, Shalene Bird of Mikisew Iskwew Beads, Kayleigh Graas of Kayleigh’s Handmade Soaps, Julia Watt and Kayla Fedje of Soul Sisters Glass, Kelli Young of Betty’s Budget Lawn Care, Joseph Arcand-Ruiz with JA Outdoors Needs and Pet Walking/Sitting, and Melissa Pilatzke with Lavender Littles Sleep Consulting.

Hogan mentioned four out of the seven are under 18, and they all completed marketing and business plans, as well as budgets and modules. He noted the $500 microgrants were spent on advertising, training, posters, equipment and supplies.

Pilatzke, 28, was one of the seven to complete the program and she said it was an opportunity to build relationships in the community. She noted it also streamlined plans for her business and made her think of certain aspects she wouldn’t have thought of on her own.

“It really got you thinking about your business, what you want to achieve and how you’re going to achieve it,” Pilatzke said. “It was extremely beneficial. My certification was fairly expensive, so that definitely put a big dent in the cost for my business.”

As a sleep consultant, Pilatzke works with parents to help them create a custom sleep plan for their child and coaches them through making changes to their child’s sleep so they can all be sleeping better. She doesn’t believe being sleep deprived has to be a part of parenthood.
