Probable COVID-19 outbreak in Fond du Lac

A probable COVID-19 outbreak is occurring in Fond du Lac, according to the Athabasca Health Authority (AHA).

According to the most recent situation report from Primary Health Care executive director Taiwo Olubanwo, the hotspot in the health region is somewhat shifting from Black Lake to Fond du Lac. He noted, however, the probable outbreak is contained and was anticipated by health officials.

There are 14 active cases in Fond du Lac, five in Black Lake and five in Stony Rapids. Three cases among the Fond du Lac numbers are out of town.

“Just before now, I would say Fond du Lac has done very well in terms of their efforts towards preventing the spread of COVID,” Olubanwo said.

Of the active cases in Fond du Lac, 40 per cent are in individuals who are fully vaccinated. Olubanwo acknowledged that might seem high to some, but he added COVID vaccines are scientifically proven to be effective.

“It could be that there are pockets of people who were testing positive all have been fully vaccinated,” he said. “It could be a challenge and it could be something that’s a bit questionable to some individuals. That does not mean that the vaccine is not effective. We’re having the Delta variant really growing right now. The vaccine certainly helps reduce the serious illness that comes with COVID.”

Olubanwo explained vaccine uptake in AHA is steady and encouraging. Targets have been met in three out of five communities, but Black Lake and Fond du Lac are behind. In Black Lake, one in seven people are fully vaccinated, while one in three people in Fond du Lac are.

In the last week, there has been multiple vaccine clinics in those two communities with more planned in the coming days.

“We want to continue to encourage the people in the communities to come out for the vaccine by all means,” Olubanwo said. “It will grow over time because all hands are on deck, we are working extremely hard to encourage, to provide more education, to be quite transparent and we are starting to hear and see a promising response from the communities.”

In the AHA, 32 per cent of AHA residents are fully vaccinated as of Sept. 8.
