Air Ronge powerlifter sets new provincial record

Years of training have paid off for Air Ronge’s Tim Zelenksy, who set a new powerlifting record in Moose Jaw last weekend.

He competed at the Saskatchewan Powerlifting Association’s 2021 Provincial Championship where he placed first in the Male Junior 83 kg Classic Three-Lift Division. He had three attempts at each lift and ultimately did 240 kg or 529 lbs at the squat, 167 kg or 369 lbs on the bench and 285 kg or 628 lbs at the deadlift.

That’s a total of 692.5 kg or 1,526.7 lbs for 97.76 International Powerlifting Federation points. The record to beat was 685 kg.

“I felt pretty good,” Zelensky said about setting a new record. “It felt validating.”

The previous record was held by decorated Team Canada and international level athlete, Connor Lutz.

Zelensky, 20, will compete next at the national championships some time in 2022 in St. John’s, NFL. He will continue to train four days per week and has been working with a coach to improve his totals.

“I used to do a lot more overhead press, rows, pull ups, chin ups, but since I got my coach now, we sort of stripped all the fat away from my training to simplify a lot because I was having issues with overtraining,” Zelensky said. “That has increased my total, so we’ll ride the wave that that’s providing and take it where it can go.”

Zelensky dreams of one day becoming an international world champion, but until then, he’s focused on pushing his body as far as it can go.
