La Ronge’s Dr. Michael Bayda is the recipient of the 2021 Physician Leader of the Year award from the Saskatchewan Medical Association (SMA).

It was announced during the SMA’s Fall Representative Assembly last week, where Bayda and three others were recognized for inspiring colleagues with their achievements and their outstanding leadership through the pandemic. Other recipients were Dr. Breanna Davis for Physician of the Year, Dr. Amit Persad for Resident Leader of the Year and Carissa McGuin for Student Leader of the Year.

“The recipients of these SMA awards have shown extraordinary leadership during the pandemic by taking on new roles and advocating for their colleagues,” SMA Dr. Eben Strydom stated in a media release. “Their leadership is needed now more than ever as the province remains in the grip of the most devastating wave of the COVID-19 pandemic to date.”

Bayda, who received his medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 2011 and moved to La Ronge that same year, said it means a lot to be thought of by the people he works with.

“I just really want to express my gratitude for all of the teams we have here,” he said in an interview with larongeNOW. “I am really proud of my whole team in La Ronge and the community for all the work we’ve done over the past year.”

Bayda is the physician lead in La Ronge for the Saskatchewan Health Authority and part of the role is connecting the physician group with the health authority, the community and trying to make sure communication is clear and everyone is working towards the same goals.

That work involves meeting together as team in large or small groups, as well as one-on-one. Bayda said the physician group in La Ronge work together with everyone taking up leadership roles in different areas.

“It really makes it special for me,” he said about the award and his work. “It’s a good reminder for me how lucky I am to be part of a great team of doctors and a great community in La Ronge working together with everyone, especially the way everyone has come together over the last year or two.”
