Green headed to Switzerland for international sports event

Michio Green has been selected to compete in biathlon at the 2021 International University Sports Federation’s Winter Universiade in Lucerne, Switzerland.

The competition will begin Dec. 11 and Green expects to remain in Switzerland for a week and a half. To qualify for the event, he participated in trial races in November and the top four athletes with the highest overall percentages were permitted to attend.

“This is something I have been planning ever since I started attending university,” he said. “It’s something I have always wanted to do. I’m actually really happy because with COVID, it was postponed and I was a little bit worried whether or not it would actually happen, but it looks like it is happening this year so I am excited.”

The Winter Universiade will mark the first time Green has competed in an international event. He would have liked to take part in such an event sooner, but said he was busy attending university and didn’t have the financial resources to do so. Green completed a Bachelor of Kinesiology from the University of Alberta during the summer.

The Winter Universiade is a celebration of international university sports and culture. With several thousand student-athletes competing in each event edition, the FISU World University Games is among the world’s largest winter multi-sports competition.

“It’s the second largest winter event aside from the Olympics,” Green said.

Green is also fundraising to attend to competition and he has so far raised $1,900 out of $6,000. The cost includes race fees, accommodations, flights, and Swiss COVID certificate. Those who would like to donate can do so here.
