Seasonal temperatures, more snow expected in La Ronge until February

Temperatures in the tri-communities are forecasted to hover near average for the rest of the month.

“Average highs for this time of year for the last 30 years is -15 C and overnight lows around -26 C, so kind of right in that sweet spot,” Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Terri Lang said. “It will get a little bit warmer as a weather system moves through tonight, and then we will see the temperatures go down again tomorrow and a little bit colder air for Friday night and into Saturday.”

Thursday morning was rather cold in La Ronge at -29 C, but Prince Albert was particularly freezing at -40 C due to a bubble of arctic air. The daytime high for today is -13 C with the temperature expected to reach -17 C tonight. Daytime highs between Friday and Monday are forecasted to be between -18 C to -21 C with nights between -21 C and -30 C.

Warmer air will move in the region starting Tuesday and Wednesday is expected to be -7 C with a mix of sun and cloud.

“La Ronge is right around that jetstream where the jetstream is hitting,” Lang said. “It is wavering back and forth that’s why it gets a little bit colder, then a little bit warmer. It is that separation between the cold air to the north and the warmer air to the south.”

Snow is also forecasted throughout the week in the tri-communities with a couple of centimetres falling tonight and then again on Sunday.

A weather system will move through southern Saskatchewan beginning Friday, which will bring blowing snow. If residents are travelling south this weekend, Lang recommends checking the Highway Hotline for road conditions before heading out.
