Family Day events bringing winter fun to tri-community residents

In spite of a temperature of -20 Celsius on Saturday, many tri-community residents dressed warmly to attend the first of two Family Day events hosted by Men of the North.

The first of which was held in the park adjacent to the Air Ronge village office and it included music, sliding, trivia games, teepee teachings, hot chocolate, hot dogs and more. There was also a place for Elders to stay warm and get away from the cold weather.

“We are looking at the news and everything that is going on in our country with this COVID situation, it kind of puts up walls and barriers,” Men of the North founder Christopher Mirasty said. “For us to do something nice and try to bring the community together to show that it’s very important for us to continue to stay together, continue working together and continuing to help one another out.”

The second Family Day is scheduled for Feb. 19 in Patterson Park between 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. It will include even more activities such as skating and an enhanced warming area.

This upcoming Saturday is also expected to be cold with a high of -17 C with snowy conditions. Mirasty encourages residents to dress appropriately for the event.

“We will look at bringing out a DJ with some music,” he said. “We will have volunteers helping with skate tying, helping with hot chocolates, coffee for Elders. Try to get it comfortable for everybody to enjoy their afternoon.”

Masks and hand sanitization stations will be available for the public. Those who are feeling sick are asked to stay at home.

The Family Day events are made possible by a $1,000 grant by the Town of La Ronge, along with in-kind support from Air Ronge and Lac La Ronge Indian Band leadership.
