Major improvements proposed for Highways 2 and 102

The Ministry of Highways has big plans for Highway 2 and 102, and local residents are being asked to provide feedback.

This week, the provincial government released details addressing future upgrades in the immediate, short and long-term for the Highway 2 and 102 corridor. The section of highways to be improve start at Far Reserve Road and continue to the La Ronge Airport.

The goal is to improve overall safety and capacity for pedestrians and traffic.

“We are in the functional design stage, which is slated for completion in 2022,” the study overview states. “No dates have been specified for other stages.”

There are several options available for potential upgrades, including a four-lane undivided highway, modified four-lane or a two-way with center turning lane. The Montreal River bridge will also be improved with options to leave it as is but adding a pedestrian pathway to both sides, twin bridges with a standalone pedestrian bridge, two bridges with pedestrian walkways or one four-lane bridge with pathways on each side.

In regards to pedestrian pathways along the highway, options include sidewalks through Air Ronge, multi-use paved pedestrian pathway on both sides of the highway through the corridor, including bollard lighting or multi-use paved pedestrian pathway on the east side of the highway with lighting.

“To address pedestrians crossing the highway our consultant will also review signage through the highway corridor and recommend improvements,” the study states. “The improvements may include crossing devices (signage) and pavement markings.”

Some issues found that could hamper enhancements include a narrow right-of-way, which could be a challenge when widening the highways. Also, lift stations near the bridge are too close and that will limit placement options for a widened or second bridge.

Access management will also need to be addressed as there are many driveways coming off the highway, most notably in Air Ronge. That could include the development of a service road, combined driveways or building right in/right out driveways.
