Ice Wolves falls in game five, preparing for do-or-die game six

Mar 26, 2022 | 9:39 AM

It has been a hard-fought series for the La Ronge Ice Wolves as a loss at the Elgar Petersen Arena means they will be fighting for their lives in game six.

The Humboldt Broncos took the game 4-1 to take the lead in the seven-game series 3-2.

Assistant coach Kyle Schneider told larongeNOW the game started off great in the first as the Ice Wolves matched the Broncos shot for shot on the score clock and held the lead for two minutes in the second before the Broncos answered back.

“Overall, we just got to get better at playing with the lead and having that Killer Instinct just to put them down when we get up one,” said Schneider.

Going into game five with the series tied at two, someone was coming out with the 3-2 advantage. Schneider said they came in with a plan of attack that didn’t go their way but the coaching staff still believe in their room.

“We knew this was gonna be a war, we knew this was gonna be a long series. So the good thing about this, they still got to come into the Mel Hegland, the wolves den, and steal a game there and that’s not gonna happen. So we plan to be back here on Tuesday.”

Holden Knights kicked off the scoring for game five early in the second as a fire from the hash snuck its way through the five-hole of Broncos goalie Rayce Ramsay.

After that it would be all Broncos with two goals from James Form, one from Ethan Zielke and an empty netter from Nicksha Eric sounding the buzzer on a 1-4 loss for the Ice Wolves.

Even with the L, Xavier Cannon worked hard in the Ice Wolves net stopping 29 of 32 shots on goal.

Puck drops for game six is at 5 p.m. at the Mel on Sunday.

In other SJHL action the Notre Dame Hounds will now be fighting for their lives as Estevan is now dominating the series 3-1 with game six tonight. Melfort is fighting for their lives with the Terriers up 3-2 in that series with game six on Sunday. Flin Flon has the game advantage over the North Stars with a 3-2 lead in that series with game six on Sunday.
