Haugen leaving Churchill as 30 years in education less than a year away
While teacher Connie Haugen doesn’t officially retire until February 2023, this week marks her final few days as a staff member at La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School.
“I’m taking a short-term contract from September to the end of February at Pre-Cam and then I am officially retired on March 1,” she said. “In order for me to get my full 30 years, I have to work until that date.”
Haugen was born and raised in La Ronge and knew from a young age that she wanted to be a teacher. She credits her ambition to become one to Linda Longpre, who taught her Grade 2. Haugen noted Longpre was nice, helpful and a committed teacher who she had the chance to work with when first starting her career.
A class of 1985 graduate from Churchill, Haugen later attended the University of Saskatchewan where she earned a Bachelor of Education degree in 1991. She then returned to her hometown and, for the next few years, she did contract work for the Northern Lights School Division at tri-community schools.
