Young athletes encouraged to register for development camp

Jul 15, 2022 | 4:47 PM

An Athlete Development Camp will start next week for those between the ages of 10 to 17.

The summer is a great time for conditioning work as athletes prepare for fall sports, said Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC) fitness coordinator, Colin Ratushniak.

“Some of the top-level athletes in the world, that’s when their main training happens and sort of bringing that to the community is a good thing.”

The six-week program will begin July 19 and end Aug. 18. Ratushniak will be one of four coaches leading the camp with the others being Parker Layton, Emma Smallwood and Kait Sears.

Sessions will occur twice per week and there is a cost of $99 to register. While there is no cap on the number of participants who can join, coaches are hoping for 20-25 athletes.

“It’s never a great idea to hone in on one specialty,” Ratushhniak said. “You become a much more diverse and better athlete with being exposed to different elements of sport and fitness. Some of them will be exposed to new movements, which is ultimately going to make them better athletes all around in whatever sport they decide to do.”

Each coach also has a different sports background, so participants will be able to learn from the unique experiences of each of them.

Ratushniak noted the development camp is held annually at the centre and has proven to be popular. Those wanting to register can reach Ratushniak at 1-204-441-1914.

For adults wanting to stay in shape this summer, JRMCC is also offering free 30-day fitness program. It began July 4 and runs until Aug. 2. Anyone interested can join the program from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. on which ever days they’d like.
