Ice Wolves seeing results for 2022-23 team recruitment

Recruitment for the Ice Wolves for the upcoming 2022-23 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season has been good so far.

That’s according to head coach, Kevin Kaminski, who explained there will be 80 players attending the team’s main camp in Saskatoon from Aug. 26–28.

“We’ve had a lot of players committed. I think it says a lot about what we have done here in a few years with the program,” he said. “The kids are wanting to come to La Ronge to play. We changed the culture and now we are seeing the results.”

Kaminski noted he’s travelled to Calgary, Saskatoon, Las Vegas, Langley, B.C., and Medicine Hat, Alta., for recruitment, adding scouts have been on the lookout at other locations as well.

With the Ice Wolves having lost nine 20-year-olds, Kaminski mentioned they’ve particularly been looking to recruit players who can score upfront.

“That’s kind of been what we have been looking for is some goal scoring and playmaking and that kind of stuff to replenish what we lost,” he said. “Only time will tell, but I think we’ve got some very good players signed who are putting up good numbers wherever they’ve been. Now, they just have to come in and adjust and be part of the team commitment and create some offense as well.”

The Ice Wolves will play their first exhibition game Aug. 29 at 1 p.m. against the Kindersley Klippers. The home opener for the regular season will be Sept. 16 against the Nipawin Hawks.

Kaminski will be in La Ronge this week to volunteer at the Elks Fair from July 22–24. The team operates a food booth and beer gardens, which serves as a major fundraiser.
