Daina Lapworth has been named the 2022 Citizen of the Year.

The announcement was made Oct. 22 at the Tri-Community Awards Gala hosted by the La Ronge and District Chamber of Commerce at Eagle Point Resort. She was nominated alongside Genevieve Kustiak, Jody Laliberte, and Rory Ballantyne. Becky McKenzie, who was the last resident to be named Citizen of the Year in 2019, was also among the nominees.

Lapworth explained she was honoured to be nominated with them, noting she was surprised and humbled to have won.

“All of the people – Jodie, Genevieve, Rory and Becky — are phenomenal people who do a lot for our community,” she said.

Lapworth has been a resident of La Ronge for 33 years and she’s been employed at Children North for 16 years. Over the years, Children North has expanded and it now includes services such as early childhood intervention, speech language pathology, cognitive disability strategy, family support, father engagement, mentorship, specialized support and an outreach clinic.

There’s a total of 25 people who are employed at Children North, which operates in multiple communities in northern Saskatchewan.

“We try and help all of the most vulnerable people,” Lapworth said. “It’s not just me, it’s the entire crew there. I just think it is really important to help people who need it. I don’t think there needs to be an award for it; it’s the right thing to do.”
