Pacey looks to increase daycare spaces, find solution to homelessness if elected to council

Robert Pacey wants to bring a voice to the council table about a number of issues if he is elected in the La Ronge byelection on Nov. 30.

“We need more daycare places in this community. The people who come up here, they have hard time trying to find daycare spots for their children and work at the same time,” he said. “Also, we need to get the private sector to build some more bachelor and one and two-bedroom rentals up here, because we have people who are having a hard time finding anywhere to live when they come up here to work.”

Pacey explained a solution need to be found for the homeless situation in town, noting he’s hopeful the federal government could provide more support in that area. He also added work has to been done on local infrastructure such as at the sewage treatment plant, which currently needs to be replaced.

Pacey also believes more police resources are needed to prevent the amount of vandalism occurring, especially downtown.

“It’s terrible that we need to have roll-up shutters and spend how many extra thousands of dollars,” he said. “I also support having cameras strategically placed in the area. Maybe we can identify more when it comes to the courts. Also, the courts have to hold these people accountable. It just can’t be catch and release all of the time.”

If elected, Pacey would also support developing the proposed economic corridor along the highway in La Ronge. He mentioned the corridor could include a truck stop because currently, drivers have no place to park and sleep overnight.

Pacey moved to La Ronge in 1989 and he and his late wife raised three children– Kim, Robert, and Chris. He is currently employed as an aircraft maintenance engineer, and as security with the Commissionaires and he runs a small vending machine business.

In the past, he spent 18 years as a volunteer with the La Ronge Regional Fire Department. He holds a Level Two Professional Fire Services certificate and a Level One Fire Services Instructor certificate.

Pacey has also been the chairperson of the La Ronge Regional Housing Authority for 18 of his 23 years of service with the group. He is currently married to Bonnie Pacey.

Others running in the Nov. 30 byelection are Terry Hunt and Jack Senft.
