Additional streetlights coming to Air Ronge, no deal struck yet for cameras

More streetlights will be installed across Air Ronge to increase walkability and community safety.

At a regular village council meeting on Monday, a motion was passed to accept a $55,000 quote from SaskPower for 26 new streetlights.

“We had done a public call out asking folks what parts of the village [are] in need of some additional lighting,” administrator Gavin Willins said.

“That was back in the fall and we got a few responses. There was also a little bit of input from council and administration on areas we are seeing as pretty dark.”

Areas of Air Ronge that will receive additional lighting include Fleet Street, Heritage Park, Air Ronge Marina, Vickers Crescent, Avro Place, De Havilland Avenue, Stinson Street, Piper Place and Otter Street. Willins noted the lights will be installed in the next few months.

He also explained there could be a possibility of adding more lights in the future, especially once municipal cameras are installed in the community.

“That’s another partial driving force behind this is just the issue with trying to find cameras that would be suitable and what we can possibly do with that,” he said. “So kind of an interim measure is what we are looking at with these lights. There’s the potential for more lights in the future. With the cameras, that’s still a little bit of a work in progress.”

In the 2022 budget announced last April, council set aside $60,000 to install closed-circuit television cameras throughout Air Ronge. Mayor Julie Baschuk told larongeNOW at the time that she would have liked to see them installed by the end of last summer.

“It looks like basically we would have to be looking at other options outside of SaskTel and the larger entities to have adequate monitoring,” Willins said. “It’s becoming more of a handful to try and get that organized.”
