JRMCC to host Mixed Broomball Provincial Championships this weekend

Mar 9, 2023 | 5:03 PM

The Saskatchewan Broomball Association’s Mixed Broomball Provincial Championships are being held at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC) starting Friday.

“This is La Ronge’s first year ever hosting this event, so it is pretty exciting,” said volunteer and organizer Roderick Sanderson.

“This one is mixed, but they also have men’s and women’s across the province depending on where they decide to host those particular events. The winner of this event goes on to nationals.”

Sanderson explained there are nine teams registered in the mixed championships with three teams representing La Ronge. Other teams are coming from Regina, Saskatoon and the Humboldt area.

Games will begin on Friday and continue until Sunday. There will be a banquet held Saturday night and Sanderson is expecting up to 165 people to attend.

“The MVP awards will be given out at the banquet,” he said. “Each team votes on their MVP, a male and a female. Each team has two MVPs they vote on and then at the banquet they award them the trophies we got for them.”

Sanderson noted broomball is a struggling sport in La Ronge, adding the COVID-19 pandemic in particular hampered interest in it. He hopes by hosting such a large broomball event, it will renew interest in broomball within the tri-communities.

“We have our own broomball league and we play every Wednesday,” Sanderson said. “That’s kind of how broomball is going in La Ronge right now. We are trying our best to keep this game afloat.”

Sanderson also talked about the difficulty in finding enough people to volunteer at the event. He said he had to find help to run admissions, the canteen, time clock and more.

The public is invited to attend any of the games at the JRMCC. There will be admission at the door.

“I invite everyone to come out and watch some good broomball,” Sanderson said. “It should be an action-packed weekend that’s for sure.”

The JRMCC will also be hosting the 21st annual Aboriginal and Métis Broomball Provincial from March 17 to 19.
