Ice Wolves bring playoff action to La Ronge this week

Mar 20, 2023 | 2:26 PM

The La Ronge Ice Wolves will be looking for strong support from local fans on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Mel Hegland Uniplex.

They will be playing the Melfort Mustangs in the third and fourth games of a best of seven series. The game sponsor on Tuesday is the Northern Village of Air Ronge, which will be supplying free thundersticks for the first 500 fans. Kitsaki Vegetation Services will be providing rally towels for all fans and the first 100 kids in the building will get a free pop and popcorn courtesy of Full Circle Service Centre at Northside. The 50/50 will start at $4,000 thanks to La Ronge Petroleum.

The game sponsor for Wednesday’s game is Elk Ridge Resort, which is sponsoring the 50/50 that starts at $4,000. They will also sponsor a putting contest and, once again, the first 100 kids in the building will get a free pop and popcorn courtesy of Full Service.

Ice Wolves head coach Kevin Kaminski explained it is very important during playoffs for fans to show their support.

“Our fans are unbelievable,” he said. “I don’t know how many, maybe 75 fans up in Melfort, and they were loud, boisterous and you could hear them when we scored, made a big play and a big hit. The fan support in Melfort was awesome, and we know it is going to be here and it’s going to be loud tomorrow and hopefully the boys can thrive off that.”

The series is currently tied with the Ice Wolves taking Game 1 3-1 and the Mustangs taking Game 2 3-2. Ice Wolves to score in the first game were Jacob Cossette, Dallyn Peekeekoot and Kale Taylor, while Aidyn Hutchinson scored on a powerplay for the Mustangs.

“Even thought they had more shots, a lot of them were from the outside and, when they did have some good scoring chances, [Dawson Smith] was there with the key saves and we scored on our opportunities,” Kaminski said. “I thought the boys played very well, played with passion and heart and sacrifice and got the job done.”

Game 2 was won in overtime, but the Ice Wolves maintained a 2-0 lead with goals by Thomas Wright and Connor Abric going into the third period. Clarke Huxley and Ben Tkachuk from the Mustangs made two goals in the third with Zac Somers making the overtime goal.

“It would have been really nice to come home with a 2-0 lead, but that’s what playoffs are about,” Kaminksi said. “It’s about adversity and momentum. Now, we have to get the momentum back in our barn, with our fans, and I think the Mel is going to be rocking. It should be a fun 60 minutes.”

The games on Tuesday and Wednesday both have 7:30 p.m. start times. Tickets are available online or at the Ice Wolves box office.
