Highway 2 and 102 improvement plan calls for second bridge in Air Ronge, double lanes

The Ministry of Highways has plans to build a second bridge in Air Ronge.

That’s according to the Highway 2 and 102 Pedestrian Safety and Functional Design Plan released by the Ministry of Highways earlier this week. The new second bridge, which will be east of the existing one, is part of the plan’s short-term improvements.

Other short-term goals include building a paved, lighted pedestrian pathway east of the highway from Far Reserve Road to Brown Street, as well as connecting the pathway to highway crosswalks. There will also be a review of all pedestrian crosswalks, all crosswalks will be upgraded and a new revised access management plan for traffic will be adopted.

“The Ministry of Highways presented the first virtual open house in the spring of 2022 and asked for [the public’s] feedback,” a statement in the plan reads. “This was taken into consideration while developing the recommended plan.”

Once the short-term goals are realized, intermediate plans call for the rebuilding of the existing bridge, along with widening Highway 2 to four lanes north from Jimmy Roberts Road to Bigstone/Frances Roberts Street. Key intersecting streets from Fairchild Street to Bigstone/Frances Roberts Street will also be widened and paved.

In addition, this phase will include many improvements to accessing the highway, along with building a non-illuminated, gravel pathway east of the highway from Brown Street to Boardman Street.

The final phase of the plan calls for widening Highway 2 to four lanes from south of Far Reserve Road to Fairchild Street, constructing a new east side service road with a sidewalk, and widening and paving Far Reserve Road, Wilson Charles Drive and Jimmy Roberts Road. Jimmy Roberts Road will be extended from Highway 2 to Cemetery Road.

Highway 2 will also be widened to four lanes from north of Bigstone to Boardman Street, including widening and paving of key intersecting minor streets.

The Ministry of Highways is seeking public input for the plan until July 10. The public can view the entire plan and submit input online here.
