Taxi deregulation, rate increase to be discussed at upcoming La Ronge council meeting

Aug 21, 2023 | 5:02 PM

Cab rates in the tri-communities could increase if a request by Family Taxi is passed.

That’s according to a document prepared ahead of Tuesday’s regular La Ronge council meeting. The request from Family Taxi includes an increase to taxi rates from the current rates of $3.90 flag fee and $0.10 for every 40 meters, to $4.20 flag fee and $0.10 per 31 meters.

A request to increase rates was received and passed in 2022 from former Family Taxi ownership, which saw the rate rise from a $3.50 flag fee, as well as an increase in rate per meter.

“Given the volatility of gas prices and operating costs, administration is concerned that rate review requests will increase in frequency,” the document states.

“This is the second request in a calendar year, and each bylaw amendment takes time and effort to implement. Further, with travel among the tri-community area, administration believes that conformity with nearby communities may be desired.”

The document notes both Air Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band do not regulate taxi rates.

In 2022, La Ronge council chose to continue regulating taxi rates, while leaving the number of licenses unregulated.

Other items on the agenda include the creation of more Lac La Ronge Indian Band urban reserves within the municipality, a banner request from the La Ronge Royal Canadian Legion Branch 371, a potential application to the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program, and more.
