Ice Wolves home opener set for Saturday

The 2023-2024 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) regular season begins Friday in Melfort for the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

The game comes one day before the team’s home opener Saturday against the Nipawin Hawks at the Mel Hegland Uniplex at 7:30 p.m. Happy hour in the Wolves Den starts at 6:30 p.m. and the 50/50 will start at $2,000 courtesy of Bedrock Electric, Plumbing and Heating.

The game against the Melfort Mustangs will be the first time the Ice Wolves have played against that team since being eliminated by them in March during the first round of the playoffs.

“It’s been a long summer,” head coach Kevin Kaminski said.

“We’ll have the first one under our belt in Melfort, and then they got to come back home and grind it out. We’ve got to demand the winning ways right out of the gate. We’ve been very successful the last three, four seasons and we’ve got to continue that. I think with the core group that we have back, I think they are ready to lead and show these young kids what it’s all about.”

There are 10 returning players with Liam McInnis being named captain, as well as Jacob Cossette, Dylan Handel, Kyle Graham and Parker Layton being named assistant captains.

With the preseason now finished, the Ice Wolves roster has been cut down to 25 from a total of 41. The Ice Wolves had four losses and two wins against the Battlefords North Stars, Flin Flon Bombers and the Hawks.

“I could care less about the record in preseason,” Kaminski said.

“We needed to work on a lot of stuff, and we did a lot of good things, so now when the real bullets fly tomorrow, we need to make sure we’re prepared mentally and physically going into Melfort.

We have to execute the game plan and we’ve got to stay hungry, we’ve got to be tenacious. We got to be relentless on the forecheck, the track pressure. We’ve got to simplify everything. Less is more and let the puck do the work, eliminate our mistakes, and then when we get opportunities, let’s have fun with the puck and capitalize on some goals.”
