La Ronge council received an update of the ParticiPARK project at a regular meeting earlier this week.

The update marked the first time council learned more about the project since a public consultation event was held in La Ronge on July 8 and 9.

Progression of the project to date includes the establishment of a working relationship and memorandum of understanding with the town, site selection, creation of an advisory group, the collection of feedback from community members and the develop of the second design iteration.

As part of the park design, there will be a main welcome sign, activity station signage, as well as a marketing and communication toolkit.

“Community members and organizations were invited to attend and provide ideas and feedback to inform the design,” a document prepared for council by ParticiPARK stated.

“These ideas were captured and helped Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds in developing the initial park design.”

The ParticiPARK project is estimated to cost $382,500 with $120,000 earmarked for site preparation, $82,500 for programming elements, $60,000 for log work and components, $50,000 for trails, $40,000 for contractual items like administration and drawing fees, as well as $30,000 for landscape features.

The next steps in the project include circulating the second iteration of the design, collecting feedback, develop a third iteration, presenting the concept to the advisory committee for approval and, finally, starting fundraising to get the money needed to build the park in early 2024.

ParticiPARKS is a pilot project from ParticipACTION funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Healthy Canadians and Communities Fund, which aims to improve health among Canadians who face health inequalities and are at greater risk of developing chronic diseases. ParticipACTION has been funded to design four equitable, inclusive and accessible outdoor parks that will become animated community hubs supporting the physical and mental health of community members.

The other selected communities are Brampton, Ont., Fredricton, N.B., and Winnipeg.
