Hordsyki announces intention to seek re-election as La Ronge mayor

Mayor Joe Hordyski has decided to run again for his position in the October 2024 municipal election.

“I look over the past four years and I think we have come a long way in terms of getting the town back on track,” he said.

“We’ve got such a strong admin team to work with. They are a pleasure to work with, and I would love to work with them for another four years and reach some of the goals we are pursuing.”

Hordyski is a veteran politician having previously served on town council from 1991 to 2006. He was first elected as mayor in 1997.

In 2020, he was elected as a councillor and subsequently became mayor during a October 2022 byelection following the sudden resignation of Colin Ratushniak.

“I am certainly determined to make some in-roads on some housing projects,” Hordyski said if he is re-elected as mayor.

“That’s priority number one. We do have the RCMP detachment that’s going to be targeted to be completed within the next four years. Of course, we have the long-term care facility and we will be going through the grand opening in about three years, so these are exciting times and I just want to be part of it and continue working for the community.”

Hordyski is a journeyman carpenter and owns J. Hordyski Contracting. He has raised children in La Ronge and he and his wife, Linda, have rescued more than 2,500 dogs through a kennel set up in their home.

Those interested in submitting a nomination for the upcoming municipal election have until Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. to do so. Aside from the position of mayor, there will be six councillor seats up for grabs.

The election will be held Oct. 2 with the advanced polls scheduled for Sept. 18 and 25.

“I just want to encourage anyone who is thinking of running,” Hordyski said.

“It’s a very rewarding commitment that you make and serving your community is an honour.”
