Fire victims to benefit from recent Firefighter’s Ball

Thousands of dollars have been raised for fire victims at the La Ronge Firefighter’s Ball held over the weekend.

That’s according to La Ronge Regional Fire Department Chief Keaton Cloud, who explained there were more than 100 people who attended. The ball, which was held at the Kikinahk Friendship Centre, featured a supper, dance, a live auction and door prizes.

It was the fire time a public Firefighter’s Ball has been held since 2016.

“[The] purpose was to help raise funds so they could be distributed to victims of fire,” Cloud said.

“The money will be given directly to victims of house fires. It’s intended to provide them with quick cash to help them get back on their feet, which could be clothes, food etc.”

The event served to recognize firefighters for their years of service. There was also a new initiative to honour former members who passed away.

“I think it’s important to celebrate their contributions to our department and community,” Cloud noted.

“It helps build a sense of family among the team. Firefighter Christopher Walker passed away from cancer in Williams Lake B.C. in 2016 at 45, Ian Irwin passed away in a tragic work accident in Humbolt in 2019 at 48, and recently, Nicole Nagy passed away in an avalanche in the Alps this past April at 25. We have a dedicated memorial to honour them in our hall.”
