Seib plans to address northern road infrastructure if elected as MLA

Road infrastructure will be one of Gregory Seib’s major priorities if elected as a Saskatchewan Party MLA for Cumberland after the provincial general election on Oct. 28.

“That’s something we really need to work on. We’ve got a lot of issues,” he said, explaining some problem areas include Highway 123 to Cumberland House and Highway 102 between La Ronge and Southend.

“A lot of our communities are single access communities and, when our roads are down, it makes it very difficult to get in supplies or for medical appointments for people to get out. These things really need to be looked at. That’s an issue I really look forward to working with and working on.”

Seib was born in North Battleford and raised in Deschambeault Lake, Glaslyn and Meadow Lake. He is currently the education coordinator for the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) Education Authority for Deschambault Lake and, in the past, he has worked as a teacher and principal.

A member of PBCN, Seib has a Bachelor of Education degree and a master’s degree in Northern Governance and Development. He also holds a Journeyman’s Carpentry certificate and worked with his father in their family construction business for many years.

Other priorities for Seib if elected as MLA include community safety like gangs, addictions and violence, addressing unemployment, increasing post-secondary training, wildfire policy changes, and supporting youth.

“My philosophy is this. I am there to look with my eyes, listen with my ears and take what I see and hear to the government table,” he said.

“I think it is very important that we do that as potential MLAs and that’s our job to bring that and to serve the grassroots people.”

Seib has volunteered and served on various community boards and committees such as the Deschambault Lake Co-Management, the RCMP Police Management Board, Church Board, Interagency Committee, and Northern Sports Culture & Recreation District Committee.

Seib noted he wants to utilize his skills, education and experience to be a strong voice for Cumberland constituents.

“I think it is time we have a seat at the table in government. I think it is very important,” he added.

“I think a lot more can be achieved when you are at the government table and bringing these issues right there to the table instead of kind of being on the outside. That’s one of the big reasons I decided to run for the Sask. Party team.”

The Cumberland riding has been firmly in the hands of the NDP since 1952. Vermette, the previous MLA, had served in that position since 2008.

Other candidates running in the riding include the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party’s Jordan McPhail and the Green Party’s Siwichis Bird-Paddy.
