Local SJHL prospects, coach set to take part in WHL Cup
A total of five Sask. Junior Hockey League (SJHL) prospects and two coaches will represent the league at the WHL Cup in Red Deer, AB next week.
Among that group, three players along with a coach associated with local SJHL clubs were named to Team Sask., including members from the La Ronge Ice Wolves, Nipawin Hawks, and Humboldt Broncos.
In the North, Ice Wolves prospect Marek McIvor will roam the blueline for Saskatchewan as he continues his rookie season at the U18AAA level with the Moose Jaw Warriors. In six games so far this season, the 15-year-old has four assists to go along with two penalty minutes. Additionally, McIvor was taken in the eighth round, 163rd overall, in this year’s WHL Draft to the Kelowna Rockets. He isn’t the only member of the Ice Wolves to be named to Team Sask. as La Ronge assistant coach Kyle McDonald will travel to the tournament as their video coach.
For the Hawks, goaltending prospect Cade Mitchell will stand between the pipes. Mitchell is also in his rookie year in U18AAA playing for the Swift Current Legionnaires. In four games, the six-foot, 14-year-old puck-stopper is off to a hot start, sitting with a 4-0-0 (W-L-OTL) record to go with a 2.95 GAA and .918 SV%. Mitchell heard his named called at the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft, going in the seventh round, 152nd overall, to the Moose Jaw Warriors.
