Year-end donations arriving at Lac La Ronge Food Bank

The Lac La Ronge Food Bank has witnessed an outpouring of support in recent weeks.

“This is the time of the year where most of our fundraising dollars come, which is usually in the fall up until Christmas and we really rely on those donations to keep us going,” said food bank president Cheryl Norgaard.

“Things are really busy in the summer and with fall comes just a more subtle society, possibly, I don’t know. It’s a season when people are kind of having a look around and just seeing what’s what and who is needing what, whether it is volunteers or money or it just seems like that’s the time of year people have a look at that.”

Recent support for the food band has come in the form of a $25,000 donation for Lakeside Spirits, as well as an additional $5,500 from Ledcor, the company in charge of the work for the new long-term care facility in La Ronge.

Large food donations have also been received through events organized by Gordon Denny Community School, Men of the North and Northlands College.

“I am just always so amazed at how well this community supports the food bank. When we say we need help, we always seem to get it,” Norgaard said.

“We’re so grateful for everyone’s contributions whether it is time, money or food. There are a lot of people who contribute financially who don’t want recognition.”

Norgaard explained operations haven’t slowed down at the Lac La Ronge Food Band, noting the organization consistently meets its 40 to 50 hamper per week limit with some clients turned away. Residents are only permitted one hamper every four weeks and Norgaard added there are always new people applying.

For anyone wishing to become involved with the food bank’s board, they are invited to its annual general meeting Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. A location is yet to be determined and it will be announced on the food bank’s Facebook page.

In addition, those wanting to volunteer or make a donation can call 1-306-420-7691. Monetary donations can be sent via e-transfer to laclarongefb@gmail.com or sent to Box 785, Air Ronge, Saskatchewan, S0J 3G0.
