WSA issues reminder of ice thickness safety this winter

The Water Security Agency (WSA) is reminding everyone to ensure the ice is thick enough before engaging in any activities on it.

“Ice does not freeze at a uniform thickness, and its strength can vary considerably from one area to another,” WSA stated in a release.

Noting that ice safety at any given location can vary yearly, it’s important to check the thickness each season rather than relying solely on past experiences.

To ensure the ice is thick enough, a minimum of four inches is needed for walking, eight inches for snowmobiles or ATVs, and 12 inches for cars or light trucks. Heavy trucks require over 12 inches of thickness.

WSA also stressed the importance of understanding that any activity on the ice comes with inherent risks, and guidelines exist to help individuals determine whether to venture onto the ice.

“Thickness is just one consideration when evaluating ice safety. Clear, hard ice is the only ice recommended for travel.”

They also suggested avoiding ice that appears, or is:

• Slushy
• Experiencing regelation
• Near moving water
• Layered, caused by sudden temperature change
• With structures such as pressure ridges
