89ers come up short against Flyers

Jan 20, 2018 | 10:00 AM

It wasn’t meant to be for the La Ronge 89ers last night, who lost 5-3 to the Whitefish Flyers.

“We were playing rec hockey tonight when we should have been playing some senior contact hockey,” head coach Barrett Halkett said. “We should have seen more hitting. We always encouraged our boys to play senior hockey instead of rec hockey.”

The Flyers opened the game with a goal in the first period, but the 89ers quickly passed them with two goals less than a minute apart in the second. The goals for the 89ers came from Floyd Cook and Brandon Bird. The 89ers, however, couldn’t hold on as the Flyers managed to score two more goals in the second and another two in the third to win the match.

With the 89ers currently in third place in the Beaver Lakes Hockey League, Halkett said he’s not concerned about losing the game considering all five teams are headed to playoffs.

Last night also marked the 89ers last home game of the regular season.

“We’re all in the playoffs and the best team is going to win,” Halkett said. “We’re a senior league where we have guys playing who also work full-time, so it’s hard to get the same consistent guys at every game.”

As for the regular season overall, Halkett noted it was tough and there were injuries along the way. Some key players are currently not playing as they recover from injuries.

Goalie Jordan Bell said he’s optimistic about what the playoffs have in store. With three makeup games left in the season, he said if the team can earn some wins, they will be in a good place.

“They played a really good positional game and they were able to, for the most part, keep us skating around,” Bell said about the match against the Flyers. “There were some missed passes and just missed opportunities.”
