Silver medal for Churchill Chargers boys basketball squad

Jan 21, 2018 | 10:00 AM

It was a second place finish for the Churchill Community High School boys basketball team.

The squad hosted its annual Northern Lights School Division 113 Invitational Basketball Tournament on Jan. 19 and 20, which attracted teams from places such as Beauval, Creighton, La Loche and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s Senator Myles Venne School.

While the ‘B’ team finished in eighth place, the ‘A’ squad advanced to the gold medal match where they ultimately lost 71-42 against the Sandy Bay Timberwolves.

“Sandy Bay was a really strong team and they’ve always been pretty good,” Churchill Chargers coach Derek Konga said. “Sandy Bay came out flying. They’re such a fast and aggressive team. There are so many good players who can shoot.”

Overall, Konga was proud of how the two teams played and made note it was a clean and well-coached game. He was also pleased with the number of squads who attended.

With the basketball season just past the halfway mark, Konga said his players have been dedicated and are willing to do what’s best for the team for the remainder of the season. The Chargers travel to Prince Albert every Wednesday and Thursday for games and practices and currently have a 12-7 record.

He’s also impressed with the number of athletes wanting to join basketball.

“We had so many boys coming out for senior basketball, I couldn’t really have a good practice with like 20 boys showing up,” Konga said. “It’s just nice to have the boys coming out all the time.”
