MMA fighter preparing for upcoming championship

Jan 29, 2018 | 4:00 PM

It’s been about nine months since his last fight, but mixed martial artist (MMA) Devon Smith of Air Ronge isn’t afraid of stepping back into the ring.

After calling it quits last year, Smith said he was enticed to come back by the opportunity to compete in the Modern Fighting Championship on Feb. 23 in Saskatoon. He’ll be fighting in the light heavyweight division at 205 pounds and Smith said it feels good to be training again.

“I got the notice of the fight around mid-December, so it’s been a fair amount of time to get ready,” Smith said. “Typically, I’d do a full-fight camp which is about six weeks. It’s not too rushed, although I hadn’t been training because I decided I wasn’t going to do it anymore.”

Even though Smith works week-in, week-out at the McClean Lake uranium mine, he’s still able to find enough time to travel to Saskatoon on his days off to train at the Modern Martial Arts Centre. He said he’s been taking two or three classes per day, and noted it’s a good place to train because a lot of other professional fighters are there as well.

“I stayed relatively fit,” Smith said about his nine-month break. “So, now it’s just a matter of getting back into a MMA gym and training for fight-specific things.”

Smith currently has a professional record of 3-4 while his opponent, Tyler Weran of Saskatoon, sits at 2-0. Smith is looking forward to the match, adding he knows the promoters well and the contest should run smoothly.

“I fought at the same event as [Weran], so I’ve seen him fight and I’m familiar with him,” he said.
