La Ronge RCMP urges public to report domestic abuse, violence

Feb 20, 2018 | 1:00 PM

Violence affecting women remains an issue in La Ronge, according to RCMP.

Community Program Officer Alex Turcotte said women were victims in the vast majority of the crimes against person cases reported to police in the La Ronge area over the past two weeks. Crimes against person include assault, assault with a weapon, sexual assault and sexual interference. From Feb. 5 to Feb. 18, Turcotte said the La Ronge RCMP received 185 calls for service, including 37 for mischief cases, 19 related to alcohol, and 15 crimes against persons. Turcotte said nearly half of the calls for interpersonal crimes occurred on either Saturday evenings or Sunday mornings.

“The RCMP wishes to remind the general public that interpersonal or intimate partner violence takes on several forms, can occur in all types of intimate relationships, and carries beyond physical abuse,” she said.

“Although physical abuse is more identifiable, other types of abuse can supersede the effects of physical violence and may occur in combination.”

Turcotte said intimate partner violence can be physical, emotional, sexual, or spiritual, and can include threats, stalking or financial entrapment. She said it’s important community resources are available for those in high-risk relationships, and encouraged the public to report all known or suspected cases of abuse to police.

“Reporting incidents of intimate partner violence to police creates an information trail that will aid in the court process, in the event the matter reaches court, and in obtaining court orders such as peace bonds,” Turcotte added.

Of the 185 calls fielded by the local police between Feb. 5 and Feb. 18, seven were related to the Mental Health Act and five were for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. There were 21 charges laid during that period, Turcotte said.
