LLRIB volleyball squads bring home the gold

Feb 20, 2018 | 4:00 PM

It was a golden weekend for two squads with the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB), who took the top spots at the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations’ Youth Volleyball Championships.

The tournament occurred Feb. 16-18 at several locations in Prince Albert, and included teams from 14 First Nations. Percy Mirasty coached the Under-18 squad with the LLRIB and said they, along with the U-16 squad, pulled off a fantastic performance.

“Our girls were really hungry because all these years they’ve been placing second,” he said. “We had a really good start, and we went undefeated. We didn’t even lose a match.”

The final game for the LLRIB U-18 team was against the Ochapowace Nation, which they won in two sets. The first set was 25-17, Mirasty said, and the second set was 25-14. The squad included seven girls from La Ronge and three from Stanley Mission.
