Millions of litres of raw sewage spilled behind Quarry Park

Millions of liters of untreated sewage spilled last month between La Ronge’s Quarry Park and McGibbon Bay.

That’s according to Town of La Ronge administrator Stephen Conway who said, at its maximum, 2,000 cubic meters of sewage was released per day from the treatment plant located behind the park. The sewage spilled for about two weeks in February as officials worked to acquire parts to fix a mechanical malfunction, ultimately affecting 700 meters of marsh.

“We believe the marsh area will clean it up for itself,” Conway said remediation efforts. “The marsh area is serving as a lagoon for us, so we’re not seeing any evidence of anything going into McGibbon Bay.”

Conway said the malfunction was due to the failure of both decanter arms that control the flow of sewage in the treatment basins. He noted the town has since fixed the arms, as well as purchased extra parts in case another incident should arise. Engineers have also been asked to produce a better design for the plant, Conway added.

Moving forward, Conway said testing will be increased this spring to monitor the spill in case it does reach McGibbon Bay. He also noted it might be time to consider a sewage plant upgrade or relocating it and changing over to a lagoon system.

“We’ve also continued testing both at the outfall on McGibbon Bay, as well as the inlet pump where the marina is situated, and we’re not seeing anything,” Conway said.

Conway said he didn’t want to release an estimate of the total spillage without conducting further research.
