Skating club members preparing for annual test day

Mar 15, 2018 | 2:00 PM

Tomorrow is an important day for members of the La Ronge Skating Club as they will be tested to see if they’ve passed certain skills this season.

That’s according to head coach Carissa Borthwick who said skaters attending a practice March 14 at the Mel Hegland Uniplex were getting ready for the annual examination. A carnival was held last week so skaters could show off their skills for family and friends, Borthwick said, adding everyone worked hard to try meet their goals.

“They work towards passing certain skills every year, and once they’ve mastered that, they can go on to the next level,” she said.

Although the ice at the Uniplex is scheduled to be thawed on the weekend, Borthwick noted two skaters will be attending a competition next month in Edmonton so they’ll be renting ice time at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre. She also said other members will participate in the spring and summer camps in Saskatoon to keep their abilities up for next season.

In all, there are close to 70 skaters involved in the club who are either in the CanSkate program, or at the Junior and Senior levels. Borthwick said about half of the members are in CanSkate, while 20 are Juniors and 14 are Seniors. Skaters practice between two to five times per week, she added.

“We have our annual general meeting on April 12 at Pre-Cam Community School,” Borthwick said. “There’s going to be vacant positions, so we really would encourage other parents to volunteer to go on the executive and help us out.”

One parent observing yesterday’s practice was Allison Thompson who has two children in the club. She said she’s been happy with the coaching from Borthwick and fellow coach Robyn Klassen, and her children have enjoyed being involved.

“It was a great year,” Thompson said. “The kids loved it and they were here every day after school five days a week.”
