Revitalization planned for Air Ronge waterfront park

Plans are in the works to redevelop Air Ronge’s Heritage Park into a more family-friendly recreation destination.

At a regular meeting of Air Ronge Council Tuesday, administration was given the go-ahead to create a project plan to guide the transformation of the park, which borders the Montreal River. While the plan is still in its initial stages, Deputy Mayor Julie Baschuk said it would include the installation of a gazebo, picnic tables, fire pits, signage, more playground equipment and the removal of some trees.

“The idea would be to have a nice big gazebo in the center, so people could hold barbecues and picnics there,” she said. “We also want to make a nice entranceway into the Heritage Park Trail because a lot of people don’t realize it’s there or how to access it.”

Council plans on building a fence to enhance the safety of residents who border the park, Baschuk said. She noted, however, that the redevelopment won’t be completed until some time next year, which will give residents time to submit suggestions or ideas about what they would like to see there. Locals can submit ideas and give feedback at a community meeting scheduled for June 18.

“We’re open to ideas and concepts people have,” Baschuk said.

Mike Maggrah, an executive member of the Boreal Outdoor Recreation Association, said he heard about the plans to redevelop the park and is all in favour of it. He said his group does a lot of work creating trails in the tri-communities, and he’d like to see even more added in the area. The project will benefit both residents and tourists, Maggrah added.

“A big attraction for a lot of people in this area is the stunning beauty of the natural rock and the boreal forest,” he said. “Trails are people’s access to nature and any trail development project to give people an opportunity to get out and experience that is huge.”
