Northlands College graduates receive degrees

May 7, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Twenty-three students from across northern Saskatchewan were presented with their university degrees May 5 at a special ceremony organized by Northlands College.

“We held one large celebration and the students from the outlying communities came in,” Manager of University Programming Chandra McDougald said. “Toby Greschner, our CEO and President of Northlands College, and our Elder Elie Fleury presented the students with a scroll, a gift and words of congratulations.”

While most of the students earned Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees, other degrees handed out included Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Bachelor of Northern Studies and Environmental Impact Assessment. Students who studied at the Creighton, Buffalo Narrows and Île-à-la-Crosse campuses traveled to La Ronge to be at the ceremony.

Northlands College will host a second ceremony May 30 for Adult Basic Education graduates at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre.

In his speech to the graduates, Greschner said Northlands currently has 200 students enrolled in university programs, and their goal is to raise that number to 500 in five years. Next fall, he said the College will offer the first year of arts and science classes in La Loche for the first time. Greschner also said there will also be more classes in Indigenous languages.

“Building on the foundation that NORTEP has laid, we will be embarking on a path to make northern Saskatchewan a world leader in the preservation of Indigenous languages,” he said. “We will continue to integrate Indigenous ways of knowing into existing programs and we will work with all partners to support research in this extremely important area.”
