La Ronge SLGA store to remain closed Sundays

Private alcohol retailers will be busier on Sundays after the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) decided not to extend hours this summer at its La Ronge location.

“During recent discussions with town council, we asked if it would be helpful to the community if SLGA not expand our hours during the upcoming summer months,” said SLGA spokesperson David Morris. “In this situation it was something the community asked, and we’ll certainly accept that.”

At a regular council meeting Wednesday, all members except for Coun. Jordan McPhail voted to approve SLGA’s proposal not to open the store. Morris said council expressed concerns related to the responsible use of beverage alcohol and public safety issues, which were reasons to make the change.

The Community Alcohol Management Plan was also discussed by council at the meeting as the next step forward is the creation of a bylaw to make the recommendations law. Deputy-Mayor Glen Watchel said he was ready to look at each one individually and come to common ground on some of them. He noted a lot of the recommendations are “no brainers,” but added there are serious issues as the plan stands.
