Firefighter overwhelmed by double award win at ball

May 13, 2018 | 2:00 PM

For going beyond the call of duty, Keaton Cloud was named Firefighter of the Year on Saturday at the Fireman’s Ball.

Cloud, who has been with the La Ronge Regional Fire Department for four years, also won the title of Most Active Firefighter – the only other award handed out last night.

He said the sudden attention was overwhelming, adding he didn’t think he’d win both.

“It feels great to not only be recognized by my chief but also my fellow firefighters,” Cloud said.

Cloud joined the department when he was 19 years old and he’s currently 10 weeks into a one-year firefighting training program in Vermilion, Alta. He said his goal is to become a full-time paid firefighter some day.

Fire Chief Wayne Tchorzewski called Cloud an active and dedicated individual, noting his heart is in the right place.

“You can detect the qualities of a person if they have leadership in them to reach the officer level and Keaton has it,” he said. “He’s very keen and he stays calm when times are hectic.”

The banquet also served as a fundraiser for the department and Tchorzewski said the funds are used to purchase equipment not covered in the annual budget. He noted there was no financial goal of the event, but some of the money could be used to buy more rescue equipment.
