Student artwork displayed at La Ronge gallery

May 17, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Students in the tri-communities have the opportunity to have their artwork displayed in a public gallery this month.

The artwork, displayed at Mistasinihk Place this month, included pieces by students from La Ronge’s Pre-Cam Elementary School and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s Senator Myles Venne School. La Ronge Arts Council’s Visual Arts Co-ordinator Anne Cook said the exhibit is an effort to bring people together.

“We had been working on reconciliation, and reconciliation in my terms means our whole community, working together,” she said. “May is usually the month for student work because the reserve schools have the Prince Albert Grand Council Fine Arts Show in April, so there’s material that has been there and may have won some prizes.”

The multi-media show included paint, charcoal, pastels and other materials. Cook said it’s important young people have an opportunity to share their works, because seeing it displayed along with the work of others gives a positive feeling.

“The young people have the opportunity see it and tell the adults what they were thinking, why they did it in a certain colour, and what it means,” Cook said. “It opens up a door of communication and a dialogue between the child and the parent, and truly that’s the best of all.”

Members of the Mostly In Focus Photo Club will have their photography on display next month at the gallery beginning June 4. It’s an open theme exhibit and all local residents are encouraged to bring their own photos to the show.
